The Soft Chess Board and Pieces were constructed at Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University). The purpose of the board is to engage players in a tactile way that stimulates the sense of touch and sight.
The chess project turned into more of a material exploration project. The materials and processes chosen were ones that I had never worked with; nylon, dye-sublimation, rubber casting, injection filler, and sand.
The board itself is composed of wood slotting, wrapped with a nylon sheet. Each tile acts as a trampoline that gently bounces. The pieces are hollow casted Oomoo Resin filled with moon sand (a combination of materials that feels quite strange yet satisfying).
